The annual 'Interior Design Excellence Awards' for 2008 is upon us again, and our Brisbane office has been short listed in category for the Best Commercial Interior for their design of MGI White Hancock's office.

The design is open plan, promoting collaboration and communication amongst all levels of the organisation, physically breaking down hierarchal barriers. A major contributing factor of Smith Madden's design was the large breakout 'informal' area, designed to reflect a café/restaurant feel and promote relaxation, interaction and style.

United Group Resources Seeks Independence - Brisbane

United Group Resources Seeks Independence - Brisbane

United Group Resources were relocating from a shared office space at Spring Hill into their first independent tenancy. As a result the design and budget of this fitout was inclusive of all new items from chairs through to storage. Most clients have some level of reuse so it was critical that the budget was kept inline whilst overcoming this.

The newly acquired tenancy had existing offices and meeting areas, therefore to minimise costs, the resulting design was planned around the retention of most of the existing offices. The exception to this were the offices at the northern and southern ends of the tenancy were removed to improve the level of natural light penetrating into the space where the workstations are positioned.

The clients brief was for a functional space which was vibrant and encouraged staff interaction and retention. They considered themselves conservative by nature and wanted to push the comfort zones to create a design that inspired them.

Each area is identified through the use of colour. Meeting Rooms –Blue & Orange; Boardroom –Black & White; Staffroom –The Green Room. The most impacting colour combination was implemented in the workspace. With the inspiration for the strong yellow and black contrast being taken from the “caterpillar” machinery typically utilised in the mining industry. The reception space is the harmoniser of the office in neutral tones with strong patterns and textures reminiscent of stone and sand commonly found in the mining industry.

Construction of the 850 square metre space was completed over a five week period between January and February 2007.

Smith Madden re-branded in June 2007 to introduce a new brand mark and visual identity for our organisation.

Embodying our core brand values of adventure, dynamism, innovation, success, accountability and growth, this new visual identity works to provide a clear and consistent image for Smith Madden.

Along with the launch of a new brand in June 2007 a new mark was also launched. The mark consists of two distinct elements, a logotype and icon. Acting jointly, these components work to create a bold, memorable, immediately recognisable and appropriate identity of enduring value.

Furthermore the icon alludes to an abstract figure. Acquiring almost human qualities, ‘The Dancing Man’, as he has been affectionately named, adds an additional level of meaning and interest to the icon. Uniting ideas of people and space is fundamental.

Smith Madden’s colour palette is a key tool in creating a unified look and feel for our communications. The immediacy of Smith Madden Orange denotes a progressive, strong, positive and adventurous company. While Smith Madden Gray works as a calming force, balancing and grounding the high chroma orange while imparting a sense of accountability. Together they create a dynamic tension with Smith Madden Orange signifying our intuitive creative psyche and Smith Madden Gray representing the analytical and systematic nature of our work.
